WJET reports that Dr. Steven Porter, the perennial challenger to Republican Congressman Phil English, is out of the race, clearing the way for Democrat challenger Kathy Dahlkemper to score Porter’s votes. It’s about time, you would think, for Porter to give it up. How many times do you have to lose in order to understand you’re not going to win?
Of course, he didn’t voluntarily drop out. 1500 signatures on his campaign petition were ruled invalid by a judge after a court challenge by three Mercer County residents associated with Dahlkemper’s campaign. Who woulda thunk it?
I live in Richmond, VA and work as a firefighter, but I try to make as many trips back to Erie is as humanly and financially feasible.
Mixing Erie and politics can be dicey, but I'm gonna try to do it here!

Thinking back to Linda Bebko Jones problem with nominating petitions, and now this instance, as well as several other challenges to petitions, it makes on think that something is dramatically wrong with the system. Starting perhaps with the thought that the county election office does essentially nothing to insure the proper procedures are followed, leaving it to others to challenge wrongdoing. That being said, its a wonder any are done correctly. On the other hand, I’m not sure the public cares.

Ian, I generally appreciate your comments, but you may be missing something on this one. Even if he doesn’t win, why shouldn’t Mr. Porter be able to be in the race?
In any kind of a race, there will always be one winner and everybody else is an also ran. But that shouldn’t stop anybody from competing. Afterall, the olympics would look pretty funny with only one or two people in each competition.
Political races are to give people options/choices. You get to choose the one who you agree with, not necessarily the one you think is going to win, otherwise how do expect anything to change?
