Now that the Port Authority has made public it’s preliminary vision for enhancing the Bayfront Experience, it’s time for a “What If?”
Some of the comments already voiced included a lot more green space, easier access from the city, and reducing the barrier effect of the Bayfront Parkway. Emphasize the historical details, the Niagara, the Blockhouse, and the fact that Erie was once the biggest fishing port on the Great Lakes. Move the park-n-ride lots out toward the edges of town and set up a light rail or trolley system to ferry visitors and reduce the impact of vehicular traffic.
Now it’s your turn to suggest. The Authority has asked for ideas, and this is just the place to do it. There must be some fantastic ideas just waiting for a chance to be aired. What improvements would you like to see happen? How do you think the renewal of the Bluff on East and West Bayfront could be tied into the plans for the lower level? In order for the whole plan to work, upgrades to the Bluff and the Bayfront need to feed and complement each other.
Go ahead and think BIG. It can happen if we all work together. So let’s start the juices flowing, and post your ideas. I will see that they get to the right people.
I am a life-long resident of Erie County, twenty years of which were spent living in the City of Erie. I retired from the tool-and-die trade two years ago, and now have time to enjoy the opportunity to observe city and county goings-on in more depth.
I hope to create a venue to suggest new ideas and solutions to exisiting problems with my blog, 'What If?'.

Well, since you asked…
We would love to see a safer faster way to connect the bluff with the bayfront via a pedestrian bridge with spiral walkway [handicap accessible, of course] If they need examples of such they can go to Wichita, Kansas and take a look at theirs.
Also I would like to see an aquarium on the bayfront or other related public space like museums,or sports venue or the like. And might I add nothing so tall as to obstract any more views of the waterfront.
Please, powers-that-be keep in mind future generations and preserve what green space and natural habitat that you can.
More accessibility from the bayfront to Presque Isle. Though I’m not sure of how.
I love the idea of light rail to connect the bayfront to downtown.
And while we’re at it why not light rail up past Frontier Park to the I-79 connector.
Thanks.

The reality of “Public Hearings” over my experiene of over 40 years is that while they take public testimony they pretty much know what they want before the public hearings and just go forward with their goals without very much attention to the “Public”. Unless that public opinion is a large enough constituency to make a major collaborative statement.
That is why I was hoping that a group such as Envision Erie would be made up of community residents speaking as one group representing the people of Erie County. Join this group, make your opinions count and be represented by a cohesive professional non-political group with established community goals. I am just another resident of the community and do not speak for Envision Erie but I realize the importance of an organized group made up of individuals compared to
individuals making a separate statement being able to really make a difference. We need to organize the community as much as possible
and shape the future of the community. For example, I heard at the hearing that certain parcels of land we owned by developers and those developers would dictate how those parcels were developed. A comprehensive master plan should have guidelines established such as architectural controls, historical districts, height and view requirements and other guidelines for all to adhere to, no matter who the developer was or who they knew or how important they thought they were and it should be a collaborative effort of developer and community guidelines. Envision Erie will enlighten the community on how other communities approached a Comprehensive Plan from the perspective of the community, believe me, the developers will have their own representation to represent their interest, if you want your community to be represented, the policies and guidelines of the comprehensive plan
are the best way to help insure that they are followed. The next step is to help the City Council follow these guidelines after the implementation of the comprehensive plan. In my opinion, this will be enhanced by a community organization such as Envision Erie while being a non-political group on all issues, will suggest the opinions of the community. Make a difference together, the whole is always worth more than the sum of the parts. Join Envision Erie and the community
to help shape the future of Erie County.
