To those of you who were unable to watch Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech tonight; You missed 36 minutes of poise, self-confidence, and a message of REAL hope for the future of the United States. You have heard all sorts of things, both positive and not, about Sarah Palin, but as she speaks, it is easy to see why she has maintained a popularity rating of 80% to 90% throughout her career in public service
When she speaks, it is with the authority of someone who knows what she wants and will fight for it, who knows right from wrong, and is not afraid to change her mind when she is convinced she made a poor decision, as in the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’. She has introduced herself as a true outsider who will be willing to take on the “Good Ole’ Boy” establishment in the fight for reform. Sure she has a lot to learn. So would Obama, yet the Democratic Party is running him, with no leadership experience whatever, as the chosen one who will save our country.
John McCain has picked a real fighter, a home-grown leader in her own right, a strong woman who deeply loves her family, as a running mate. McCain is a true hero who spent over 20 years serving his country in the military, with many years of experience and the wisdom of maturity behind him. He has chosen a young idealist, who will be an able Vice President, and a sign of hope for the future.
There is a long two months until the election in November, and it will be an invigorating time, something that this country has not experienced in a long time. Let’s hope the excitement continues, with clean, honest, campaigns from both parties.
Let the battle begin!!!!!
I am a life-long resident of Erie County, twenty years of which were spent living in the City of Erie. I retired from the tool-and-die trade two years ago, and now have time to enjoy the opportunity to observe city and county goings-on in more depth.
I hope to create a venue to suggest new ideas and solutions to exisiting problems with my blog, 'What If?'.

My wife and I stayed up last night to watch her since she’s new and we’re still undecided (both candidates are equally unappealing to us). Based on last night, she laid the smackdown. She was confident, had no problem laying down the law and came across to us as “hey I’m a regular person like you and deal with the same problems”. She seemed human and not some marketing buzzword bs’er
We make it a point to not speak of politics (besides with each other) but last night it was like watching the Daily Show. We were highly amused.

I believe she has the natural ability to become a national figure for decades to come. IF she WANTS that. She struck me as looking as this as a task to be completed, not a career. The way she picked up and held the baby after the speech tells me this woman knows how to be happy no matter what she is doing.

One thing I know for sure is that these coming weeks will be filled with an energized electorate for both parties-something we have not seen in recent memory! I can’t wait! It has been interesting watching both conventions. Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty and see what the two major parties in this country put forth as feasible solutions to our challenges!

I think you are very ill-informed and naive about what Sarah Palin is all about. She is an opportunist not an idealist. She rode party boss coatails until she made the calculation that she could prosper by selling them under. Good politician yes, crusader for change no way. She was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it but that is just the tip of the iceberg. She was one of the biggest (and most successful) lobbyists for pork barrell spending in the US as mayor of Wasilla and governor of Alaska. So big that she even made John McCain’s list of bad boys (and girls). All the more troubling that she has ZERO national security and foreign policy experience. Sad that you can be so short on substance (all you have to be is cute and have a photogenic family) and get so far on personal ambition and guile.

Ryan,
Would you kindly delineate exactly how much national security and foreign policy experience EITHER Mr. Obama or his mentor-to-be Joe Biden have accrued??

Since you asked :-)…
Biden is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was actually in Tbilisi while the Russians were kicking their butts in Ossetia a couple of weeks ago - he was answering Georgia’s president Mikheil Saakashvili call to him for help. He has EXTENSIVE foreign policy and national security experience. Biden’s son is a captain in the Army JAG corps (and Attorney General of Del.) preparing to deploy soon to Iraq.
Barack Obama lived in the world’s most populous muslim country for 4 years as a child. His father was Kenyan and his extended family lives there. Both are key strategic parts of the developing world and count for something in the eyes of folks overseas. He is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairs the European Affairs Subcommittee. He is also a member of the Homeland Security and Governemental Affairs Committee and the Veteran’s Affairs Committee. He’s made a bunch of trips overseas on official business during his tenure in the Senate and to spend time with family, etc.
I think Palin pales by comparison to either one. The extent of her experience is as head of the Alaska National Guard. Unfortunately she ceases to be its commander in chief when the troops are activated as they come under federal command at that point so that argument is pretty bogus. Alaska has the nation’s smallest national guard contingent.

Thanks, Ryan, even though I am a lot more conservative, this sort of information is vital to people who wish to make an informed decision. Here is a link to the wiki page on Obama for those who wish to delve into his past history a bit deeper.

and also one for Joe Biden

Thanks for having a civil discourse on the subject. As the other guys remarked its going to be fun to to watch. I think it does matter who runs the country. And it matters that we are informed whichever way we lean. Thanks again!

Lets’s take a look at where the candidates are sending their kids to school.
It turns out that Sarah a Palin’s kids are the only ones who attend public schools and she really is a PTA mom which no doubt resonates with the folks who don’t have the cash to send their kids to private school.
Since Obama is such a fan of public schools, why arn’t his kids going to them? Either, this Harvard educated couple are totally hypocritical elitists or they are educated enough to know about the how poor most public schools are.
“So it is with huge grief-filled disappointment that I discovered that the Obamas send their children to the University of Chicago Laboratory School (by 5th grade, tuition equals $20,286 a year). The school’s Web site quotes all that ridiculous John Dewey nonsense about developing character while, of course, isolating your children from the poor. A pox on them and, while we’re at it, a pox on John Dewey! I’m sick to death of those inspirational Dewey quotes littering the Web sites of $20,000-plus-a-year private schools, all those gentle duo-tone-photographed murmurings about “building critical thinking and fostering democratic citizenship” in their cherished students, living large on their $20,000-a-year island.
Meanwhile, Joseph Biden, the Amtrak senator, standing up boldly for the right to be a Roman Catholic, appears to have sent all three children to the lovely looking Archmere Academy in Delaware. Archmere’s Web site notes some public school districts allow Archmere students to use public school buses. Well, isn’t that great — your tax dollars at work in the great state of Delaware because with $18,000 a year in tuition, they can’t afford their own buses.
Then again, a spot of happy news for the Democrats: not only did John McCain’s four children attend elite private schools in Arizona, but collective donations to their children’s private schools between 2001 and 2006, totaled $500,000.”

Dale,
There is absolutely no question that Sarah Palin is already a very famous person and she might very well end up in the VP office if the Republicans win this election.
It is really very interesting to me to see all the winking not only from Sarah but also from McCain and how they try to connect to the average guy in the US.
I found out the link below in yahoo.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081007/ap_on_el_pr/palin_tax_returns
Which might confirm once and for all that Palin might indeed be Jane six-pack or wherever average person in the US filing for taxes returns filing extensions, making errors in their tax returns and incurring in possible penalties?
But my main concern know is how the hell is it possible that a person at that level does not know that the IRS is the Law of the Land and paying taxes promptly is better. At the very least why the hell she did not hired an accountant. She is the governor of Alaska and she did not bother to ask for advice?
I just can not imagine this person (Palin) dealing with more complex issues at the government level, But, she will not be the first politician cheating or making errors in their tax returns. I guess one of the most famous ones was Richard Nixon.
Maybe she really will be good for the country fighting with the IRS and getting rid of the monster or at least change the Law for a flat simple income tax.
Or at the very least because apparently she is a fast learner she will fit perfectly with the other crooks in Washington.
