A hearty welcome to Ed Tonkin, the latest member of the GlobalErie Network.
Ed is the author of our newest blog “The Gulf Of …” — a title that is play on his last name. (If you don’t get the reference, please Google “Gulf of Tonkin”.)
He will write from the perspective of a libertarian, which should […]
The late Jack Tirak built one of Erie’s most popular and important Web sites in Erie Media-Go-Round.
And since Tirak’s untimely passing in June, there have been a lot of discussions about how to best reignite the discussions that he had started on his landmark blog.
Today, Joel Natalie attempts to fill the void with The Press […]
One of our biggest goals with GlobalErie is to provide a platform for writers and thinkers to share their opinions and feelings with others who care about Erie.
After more than a year online, we’ve accomplished that goal — offering a free venue to more than a dozen writers and podcasters.
Today, I’m pleased to announce the […]
One of my favorite Pennsylvania blogs, Pennsyltucky Politics, offers an argument why Sen. Bob Casey Jr. could be an ideal running mate for Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama.
It’s not because of his political track record, or his politics.
It’s because of his name.
Surface argument or not, do you think having Sen. Casey on the ticket would […]
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the first post on GlobalErie.
When we started this site, we were hoping to start a discussion about Erie — and have some fun along the way.
The first year has exceeded our expectations.
We’ve hosted mayors, CEOs, and leaders of some of Erie’s most important institutions.
We’ve discussed some big ideas, honored […]
Berlin’s Wall author Jim Berlin for the past several weeks has been encouraging me to give his brother, Doug, a venue for a new sports blog.
Jim insists that it will be a hit. And, quite frankly, he has a pretty good track record when it comes to spotting talent (just look at how quickly he’s […]
Picker-blogger Dale Hannah went to Erie County Executive Mark DiVecchio’s town hall meeting in North East last night and offers a report on What If?
Hannah is also looking to post some more in-depth reports on the blog in the coming days.
Jim Russell’s CleveBurgh Diaspora has an interesting critique of the leaders of so-called Rust Belt cities.
It seems the critical comments (which he attributes to colleague Richard Herman) frequently thrown at Erie’s political leadership extend into neighboring cities, as well.
Two excerpts worth noting here.
The first:
In defeat, and afraid to compete globally (immigrant talent—bad, free trade —- […]
Dale Hannah reports on the opening night of the Rust Belt Bloggers Summit on What If?
An excerpt:
Some of the initial discussion focused on technique, gaining credibility, changing the “underdog” attitude that seems to permeate the minds of residents of the Rust Belt cities and towns. The power of the blogging world to reach those […]
Pittsburgh City Paper has taken note of this weekend’s Rust Belt Bloggers Summit in Erie — and is pointing to this Web site as an example of the type of discussions that are taking place on locally themed blogs in the Rust Belt region.
Here’s the opening to the piece, which is online today:
Looking quickly at […]
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.
