The images of the hundreds of blue-shirted volunteers who have flocked to the East 21st Street home of Clara Ward are truly heartening.
The Erie community has certainly come together under the bright lights of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to help a neighbor in need. The event has created a spirit and buzz that will certainly make an impact for one of Erie’s unsung heroes.
Even better, Grace Church has mustered a small army of volunteers to complete smaller home-improvement projects in the east side neighborhood surrounding Ward’s home.
But for all of the hoopla, part of me wonders where all of these people were before the TV cameras rolled into town.
There are hundreds of homes on Erie’s east side that have fallen into disrepair. Hundreds of families with limited resources who could have used a jump start in rebuilding their neighborhood. Dozens of public parks and vacant lots that have gotten almost no attention for decades.
We’ve addressed this problem on this blog in the past.
We’ve seen community leaders such as Gary Horton speak up about the neglect on the east side.
Perhaps all Erie needed was a catalyst. And perhaps TV personality Ty Pennington and his bullhorn can rally the community in ways that Erie’s home grown leaders have been unable to in the past.
My fear, though, is that once the cameras leave town, all of the volunteers will go back to their daily lives with warm memories of this experience.
And that will be it.
My hope is that someone who is truly invested in Erie will instead pick up the bullhorn and rally this army of kind-hearted people to continue what’s been started.
My hope is that we’ll see an influx of energy into the east side that will boost the spirit of those who live there and improve its value.
It sounds a bit pie-in-the-sky, for sure.
But the producers of Extreme Makeover are selling a package filled with hope and warm feelings. They are selling the idea that they can inspire change and improve lives.
Unfortunately, the show will soon move on to another city — creating the same wave of energy and excitement for another family with another compelling story.
When that happens, it will be up to those left behind to continue this work.
Otherwise, Erie will have little to show for this spectacle.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

Peter,
I agree with you–this neighbor-helping-neighbor is the spirit that built this great country and should be once again. Not just when the tv cameras roll and celebrities remind us that it is so.
I hope this starts something more permanent, but probably not, huh? You’re right–PLENTY to do here all of the time.

Seems to me that there are many groups and organizations in Erie everyday doing something special to help move Erie forward, one of the problems is that the community is not aware and there is not one forum that spotlights the data base of these groups and has a bulletin board that updates the core of what is being accomplished on a consistent basis.
Global Erie is certainly a place that could initiate a bulletin board and a method of contact that would make it easy for a data base of groups such as Envision Erie, Young Erie Professionsals, Grace Church, Chamber of Commerce, Mayors Office, Economic Development of both the City and County, Bayfront Authority, Educational and Research groups at our educational facility, GE Transportation, Manufacturers and Business Association and the many other groups and key individuals could use Global Erie as a central point to update their progress and lack of progress and the community could comment and be aware of what is really happening and hopefully enpower the positive and not focus on the past and the negative….Erie should not be going that way…it is about NOW ..the PAST is a foundation that made Erie what it is today….stronger because of it….the illumination of what GOOD that is happening today will create the energy to move it forward…..that is the direction Erie and the entire area should continue its destiny……

I believe the idea of people with means helping those who are without is also espoused in the bestselling book of all time.

The idea of helping those without is a great idea- and it is indeed espoused in the book Peter is referring to- but those receiving the help need to know how to respect the charity of others, which is also a principal that the Bible espouses .
An example of what I’m talking about- there have been 3 houses on the Extreme Makeover show where the recipients have lost the house given to them free and clear to foreclosure. In one case, the family recieved a free and clear house with enough money to pay college tuitions and taxes for years. This family mortgaged the house all the way up to the $450,000 market value, couldn’t make the payments, and lost the house. That’s sheer stupidity, and not respecting the charity of those who made that happen in the first place.
I’ve also heard stories from housing authorities where a family is put into a nice house with an affordable payment, but instead of making the payments or paying their taxes, people are buying big screen televisions and going out and eating steak every night. Then the house gets trashed and ends up being foreclosed on.
Of course these things don’t happen in every case, but it happens more than you would imagine. The hard truth is that a lot of people that are “down” have inflicted their own wounds, and if that behavior doesn’t change, then all the outside help in the world will go for naught.

Mike –
You make some great points there — and that is one of the drawbacks of this show. Once the cameras are gone, anything can happen.
Sadly, you cannot save some people from themselves. In many ways, it’s the “If you give the man a fish …” axiom.
It’s also the same argument some people use against donating money to groups like soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Yes, they provide relief. But they don’t solve the root problems. Ultimately, it’s up to the people who are receiving the help to leverage it to improve their lives in a real way.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to change things on the east side (or anywhere). Here are a few simple ideas:
Pick up the trash around your home. Your landlord pays for garbage pickup, use it.
Cut down the weeds and mow the lawn. Tell your kids to stop breaking windows of homes in the neighborhood.
If a child is shot on your street, be a witness for the police and not an accomplice to the crime. That’s right, I said it: SNITCH!
Refuse to harbor drug dealers in your neighborhood.
Fathers, go back home to your children. Mothers, welcome them home.
Do that and your neighborhood will improve. Don’t do it, and there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do for you.

Extreme Makeover embodies the quintessence of altruism which Ayn Rand’s objective realism abhors. She must be spinning in her grave.

Hi Peter,
Assuming you are referring to the bible, you are right. Unfortunately, ‘the book” is sold and not given. Crazy capitalists are everywhere–even in printing and selling us bibles and making profitable TV shows about other people helping others.

Tom~ wow .. common sense!!!!!!!! I thought it was gone! What a great idea.. !!
All kidding aside.. we all know in our hearts that’s correct.. thanks for putting it in writing.. it’s when we make the solution harder than the problem cycle …

Grace Church, a Church not located in the City has been doing this for quite a while through a mission formed by the members called, ServErie. Just because you haven’t heard about it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen all the time quietly behind the scenes. And Grace is just one organization….there are many. I urge you to check out http://www.whoisgrace.com and take a look at ServErie and the many things we have been quietly doing for the community.
