In Erie (and in many cities, actually) the same handful of people tend to get all of the accolades.
That’s why I was gratified to see some new names among those who offered nominations for our second-annual GlobalErie Person of the Year award.
Some well-known names such as Millcreek cancer researcher John Kanzius and Erie Redevelopment Authority head John Elliott were thrown into the mix.
But it was encouraging to see some names that don’t get much attention locally.
GlobalErie readers nominated folks like Almitra Clerkin at the Erie Playhouse, the late Jack Tirak, businessman Kurt Duska, and plastics entrepreneur Joe Prischak for his humanitarian work in Africa.
But in the true spirit of the award, I want to single out one person who has been an unsung hero in Erie and who is quietly working to help improve the community.
Donna Reese received quite a bit of support from readers who pointed out her work with the Erie City Mission and Erie Homes for Children and Adults. She is also a successful businesswoman who has been active with the Athena PowerLink program.
One GlobalErie reader, Karyn, said this:
She is just a very active member of the community and one of our “unsung heroes”. Others that have been nominated are equally worthy of accolades, but it would be nice to see a new face win for Person of the Year.
I agree.
Erie has many people who, like Donna Reese, go above and beyond to help others.
They are what make Erie special.
And, sadly, we need many more of them.
Let’s hope others will follow her lead.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

Good on ya sis’. I know two themes Donna and I have discussed are doing the right thing, and passing it forward. From doing a tremendous thing like helping a veteran she had never met, but is now a true friend with, to going back to her roots by helping the Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Donna has helped many people who weren’t in the headlines. As a result some headlines have been made.

Donna,
I am so proud of you! I can’t think of a more deserving person to receive this award. There were so many good nominations but you truly are the “unsung hero” in the Erie community. I am very proud to call you my friend!
You are an asset to the Erie community you do so much and never expect anything in return because everything you do comes from the heart!
I will never forget the first time you told me of your “veteran”. I remember tears welling up in our eyes as you told the story, then telling about the Erie Homes for Children & Adults again another area that is so dear to your heart. The countless hours working at the City Mission and the list goes on.
Congratulations once again!

There is no doubt in my mind Donna deserves this honor! After years of welcoming others into the Erie community (including myself), she is a perfect example of the love and warmth felt in this wonderful city. Congrats again, Donna. Your city, your family and friends, and your community should be very proud of producing someone so talented.

Thanks to all of you for your votes and confidence. I can only hope that I can give back to my community, both business and charitable, the time and effort that has been given to me. I can’t wait to “pay it forward”….

Congrats Donna. I have never met a more loving person to people she doesn’t even know. I met her through the benefit for Jason Baird and she welcomed me to Erie like I have known her all my life. I heard about her veteran and was so blessed to even be in her presence. Meeting her son was such an honor and she can be so proud of him. She deserves to be recognized by the City of Erie. She is a real asset to you folks there. Love you, Carole, Struthers, Ohio
