Did you make it back to Erie for the Thanksgiving weekend?
If so, what were your impressions. Did anything surprise you?
Sometimes, it’s hard to spot changes in a place when you are there every day.
But when you let months or years pass, the changes are much more noticeable.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

I think the changes to the millcreek mall facade are nice. However, when I stopped by today, there was a spot where the roof was leaking and damaging the improvements. I think it may surprise people how nice it looks. And thankfully, it was financed with private funds.
I think the owners may be in for a rude awakening after the holidays when several stores close. I’ve already heard Starbucks plans to leave after the holidays. And there are several seasonal stores and kiosks which will likely do the same. Moreover, the sales to Canadians will probably be down this year with a less favorable exchange rate than last season.

The seasonal stores & kiosks usually leave after the Christmas Holiday. If that’s a shock to the Mall owners then they are in the wrong business.

Jimmy,
I agree. However, the difficult economic time may contribute to more significant vacancy in coming months than is common to our mall.

I hadn’t been to Erie for 11 months. I saw the huge hotel/parking complex right next to the dock. Wow, that thing is big and looks ritzy. I also saw the new Waldameer coaster. The big LECOM health center on Peach St. is also new.
I also enjoyed not paying sales tax on clothes–so I tried to do some Christmas shopping!

Here are some thoughts:
What struck me is driving West 26th St. into Erie, and seeing much of the same buildings and business I’ve ever seen.
How little time it takes to get anywhere.
Also, how wide 12th St. is in relation to the traffic on it.
What good balance you have to have to walk in the snow, ice, and the muck.
What a big deal the Monday after Thanksgiving is.
How I wished I could do what I do in Erie and not 10 hours away.
