Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama squared off Friday night in their first pre-election debate.
The first round was focused on foreign policy — with a healthy dose of questions about the financial meltdown.
What did you think? Did either candidate change your mind or solidify his position?
More importantly, what questions do you want asked in subsequent debates that are of particular importance to Erie and similar industrial cities?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
By the way, here’s a full transcript of last night’s dance.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

Hi Sarah! Thanks for the link.
I watched the debate last night at that Washington Post link online.
I had simultaneously set up CNN online (the old CNN PIPELINE) to see which came in better, for a lip reader like me.
I was surprised to see the CNN on time delay; it was NOT broadcast live—-but on a delay loop. I wanted live so I switched to Washington Post link. CNN was minimized and when I missed certain words, I maximized CNN briefly, and read it again….late.
I was kinda hoping McCain would not show up, just so the canned speeches would be cut in half by both guys…..no luck there.
It was the first time I realized how much McCain looks like comedian, Don Rickles. His tie gave an appearance of an old barbershop pole topped by a white comb over. Sarah Palin came to my mind each time McCain spoke.
I wondered if this election was like an old Erie election, that of Cannavino beating Tullio in the primary and running in the fall.
Cannavino up and died on the electorate 13 DAYS before the election and Lou Tullio graciously accepted the coronation. Dems always win in Erie in the fall; the battle here is in the primary, then it is over.
Anyway, I stared at the barber pole and thought:
“If this guy up and died 13 DAYS before the election like Cannavino did, would Sarah Palin be moved up to primo candidate? OR, would the appointed be anointed from elsewhere?
To be fair, Obama had on what looked like a yellow shirt. I do not like my presidents in yellow.
“Not very prudent” as Bush the Smart 1 used to say.
“Bad. Bad.”
The lighting was abysmal in Mississippi. Both men had clip mikes on their lapels. Why the clunky microphone on a podium that cast shadows on both guys that looked like nuclear-radiated, oversized sperm?
The lighting should be 45 degrees from the sides to highlight both sides of the face, without shadows.
Mississippi light guy had them too high and turkey necks were darker than needed; shadows everywhere. They should let me do the lighting for the next debate, eh?
Obama was the first to look at the camera and address US, instead of Jim Lehrer. Means zip to you, but for a lip reader, I was glad to see his face. It meant he can do more than one than one thing at a time. They had to keep an eye on Jim for time cues. Lehrer should have been up higher.
It was like going to a pharmacy and looking up at the clerk all the time to get a prescription filled. Jim’s shadows were worse than the other two by being low.
I was surprised to see BOTH men write notes with their left hand.
Looks like the next Prez will be a southpaw. I am surprised the news media has not played that up as much as the Palin’s favorite ice cream flavor like this gem:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Footage captured the Palins being greeted by cheering supporters and mingling with customers without the uncomfortable presence of reporters shouting questions at Palin. The campaign later sent them an email detailing the flavors of ice cream each ordered.
“Piper had Oreo Overload. Willow (14) had Birthday Cake Mix (sic). Todd had chocolate with peanut butter. Gov. Palin also had Birthday Cake Mix (sic).”
The flavors did not appear in many accounts of the Palins trip to Florida.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lehrer is respected, but I find it odd that He, and HE ALONE determined all questions. He forgot to cover all, in the Axis of Evil and how the USA blundered North Korea into nuclear weapons.
(Hint: we refused to negotiate without preconditions! Um, that came up with Iran on using preconditions ,or not, and Obama could have played that harp better by showing the cause and effect of pursuing NO TALKS unless preconditions are set).
I did not like the reminder by Barack, of McCain singing a fine Beach Boys tune, “Barbara Ann”.(McCain is hard of hearing too, so he sings it “Bomb Bomb Bomb…Bomb Bomb Iran”). Dennis Wilson shuddered in his grave.
The Beach Boy songs should always be under domestic policy debates, not foreign. I hope they do Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac in its entirety for the domestic issues debate. Rumors is all we get daily anyway.
The Washington Post placed a paid-for advertisement from Mccain next to the debate screen. It said; (paraphrase)
“The women in Obama’s Senate Office are paid 83 cents on the dollar.
Obama is all talk. Click for more details”
Approved and Paid for by McCain/Palin
This made me wonder.
Don’t both guys work in the Senate?
Which guy employs MORE women?
Do McCain women make MORE than 83 cents on the dollar?
Is it a function of the individual Senator, or do all the babes still make less dollars than men, as is the case worldwide?
(Except for Carly from Hewlett Packard and Cindy McCain)
Michelle Obama showed class by being the first to walk over and shake hands with the enemy after the debates.
Cindy’s hairpiece was not up to Uber rich standards at all.
Humility and wisdom are missing by both guys.
These are precisely the traits that made Honest Abe so able.
We need to amend the Constitution to allow TWO Veep candidates running with each Prez candidate. On election day, voters could pick the better of all 4 and pick the best Veep in case we need one for real.
Speaking of which, did Dick Cheyney croak? I have not heard a word out of him since he shot his buddy in the face, and took a mulligan.

To be honest I fell asleep during the debate and everytime I woke up I heard Mr. Obama say, “I agree with Senator McCain.”
I was and wasn’t interested in this debate, because I no longer have a dog in this hunt. Both candidates I find to be the worst from each party. For the Democrats I’d hoped that Gov. Richardson would be the nominee, for he was a govenor and had international experience. I wouldn’t have voted for him, but having him be President would be several steps up from the Illni Socialist, who must have failed math in school, because his programs and tax receipts do not add up.
I would have voted for Dr. Ron Paul gladly. Tho I disagreed with him on the troops in Iraq, a bit-not much, I agreed with him on everything else. McCain is an honorable man who hasn’t a clue as to constitutional government or an understanding of monetary policy. Inflation under either McCain or Obama will rage.
So as to the debate, can we get two other candidates? As for me I’m voting Liberatian, former Congressman Bob Barr, of Georgia. There’s four men up for Presidernt on the Commonwealth’s ballot. Choose wisely, for your soul’s sake if for no other reason.
Remember the lesser of two evils is still evil. Do not choose evil!

where are the real questions for the debate. Not the post cards they give them to ask the canidates, but the real american questions, like why is the tax payers paying millions for portarican rum,why are we paying 250 million and up for hollywood to make movies that uses Gods name in vain, why all the waste of money to the rich that got their selfs into greed. How much of the 700 billion should go back to the hard working americans 401k,why would it not of been cheaper to give all americans ahundred thousand dollars and let us pay off all are debts, mortages, credit cards, school loans, borrowed loans.when it all comes down to it the 150 million Obama and the 150 million McCain both have spent on this campain trail, they could of gave every american a million dollars and we could care less who wins and gets to fly around the world free on the american tax payers money, the rich get richer and the poorer stays poorer.
