Erie is known for exporting locomotives, plastics parts, plumbing fixtures, and magnetic equipment.
It’s also known for exporting people.
In recent memory, Erie has given the world Tom Ridge, Pat Monahan, and Steve Scully — to name a few.
Since part of our mission here is to talk about those who have left town, I’d like to create a new GlobalErie distinction — The Erie Expatriates Awards.
Over the next two weeks, I’d like to see nominations pointing to graduates of Erie high schools or colleges who are achieving great things in their new hometowns.
Ultimately, my goal is to create an annual list of 10 Erie expatriates who deserve special notice — and to profile those 10 people on our site.
By doing so, I think we’ll be able to bring more people into this conversation — and also call attention to some folks who might not be getting notice in their hometown. Along the way, I’m sure we’ll uncover some great stories.
So fire away! Post a comment or shoot me an email to nominate someone. And please spread the word so we can get as comprehensive a field of nominees as possible.
It should be fun.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

A good start. Both Blucas and Sansone are worthy choices.
I also want to make sure we’re not just focused on celebrities. I’d like to find people doing cool things who are outside the spotlight, too.
Benjamin Lawrence

I would like to nominate myself, Ben Lawrence! I graduated from Cathedral Prep, and since graduating from University I have been living and working in Eastern Europe. I was in Bulgaria with the US Peace Corps, and then went on to working as a US government contractor on business and policy reform in Bosnia. Now I’m living in VT managing international development projects.
Does that qualify?

More people in the world know who Bob Sanders is than Pat Monahan. And sadly, probobaly Tom Ridge as well. Plus, I don’t see Pat Monahan putting on free clinics for hundreds local kids.

Good point, Wizo. For some reason, I didn’t think of him when I put together the post.
That said, we’ve recognized him in the past and I’m looking for some new names and faces, if possible.
And, Jim, not only will I not nominate myself, I don’t fit the criteria. I didn’t attend high school or college in Erie.

Nick Adams graduated from Mercyhurst HIgh School and is on Broadway. Also in underware ads. On top of showing up Mario Lopez and appearing in dozens of magazines.

Are they suppose to be nominees that have stayed in the Erie area??

We’re actually looking for folks who have left the area. We’re trying to find folks who have gone onto things in other cities that the locals might not know about.

I remember reading in the EMGR blog that Dan Rapela had been nominated for a few Emmys. I don’t know if many from Erie are aware of that.

How about Girard’s Curt Miller? Head coach of the Bowling Green University women’s basketball team. Voted MAC Coach of the Year for four years in a row.

This is a bit of a homer pick, but how about Paul Weitz? I am not sure if he is granting interviews or anything but it would be an interesting one, I am sure…

Whoops. I got a bit distracted and meant to point out that Weitz should be profiled more than chosen as an ex-pat of the year.

Peter,
I think Dan Snow an actor and artist who now calls the NYC area home should be a nominee.
Dan is well respected in his field and I suspect remains the gentleman he was even as a teen. Although Dan is a few years younger than I, we became friends when I was still in high school and he later was in college with my wife. I last talked with Dan probably in the late 70s, but I think of him often. He is a fine example of the best Erie has to offer, as is his brother, a local doctor.

Dale,
You know of Mark Stepnowski. Mark Stepnowski could care less who you are. I think that’s saying something. Keep pushing the Repub Party.

Jeff, I guess it’s saying something, I’m no too sure what. Why don’t you explain it? And yes, I knew Mark from his wrestling days at St, James School, when I helped out with the team. I’m just not sure how someone as smart as he turned out to be a pothead. I’d have to say I don’t much care if he knows who I am.
