Erie native Douglas Derda has a great blog for those (like yours truly) who enjoy craft beer.
The blog, called Should I Drink That?, has been getting quite a bit of national attention of late following a feature story in DRAFT magazine. SIDT’s podcast was also a finalist in the food and drink category in the 2007 Podcast Award.
On its own, this is enough for the Erie expat to get a mention on Outside Erie.
But the Pittsburgh resident is also doing quite a bit of pr for his hometown. He’s arranged to give away a weekend in Erie as part of a promotion on Should I Drink That?
In turn, he is offering another example of how expats can still be a positive influence on Erie.
Here’s what Derda’s crew is giving away as part of the promotion:
Doug, you clearly deserve a toast for working to promote your hometown.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

LOL–I’ve known Dougie since he was in diapers-his family, Bob Sr., mom Kathy, and big brother Bob Jr. lived in my backyard, almost, anyway. Brother Bob Jr. worked in the front office of the Pittsburgh Pirates for many years. Needless to say, the whole family is the most fanatic Pittsburgh fans I know. Good to see him remembering his roots. Nice job, Doug!!!!

As a craft brew enthusiast, Should I Drink That has been a staple in my podcast favorites list. With so many craft beers glutting the market now, Doug and his co-host do a great job of steering you in the right direction when deciding which ones to try, and which to stay away from. They should be commended for their work not only to spread the good word about craft beer, but for bringing awareness to their community. Doug’s a stand-up dude.

Dale, you’re aging yourself by saying you knew me in diapers since I’m 32 now
I subscribe to this site on my RSS reader and wondered if you were the same person my family knows.
Thanks Peter for the post. I’m always glad to help out the hometown whenever I can. Erie’s craft beer community has made an enormous impression on many of our listeners and every chance I get I tell people in Pittsburgh that a great craft beer trip is only 2 hours away.
We’re looking forward to recording the Beer on the Bay event. If anyone wants to say hi we’ll be walking around. You may even end up on the show!
Thanks for the kind words Phil! We do our best to help educate the Bud/Coors/Miller drinkers out there that options are available to that fizzy yellow drink in their hand. We also try to make it entertaining so you’re not put to sleep by some snobbish boring voices. Craft beer is fun and that is how it should be enjoyed. It’s meant for celebration, not for watching paint dry.
cheers!

Beer is good.
The WQLN Beer Fest was a blast - hoping to make it to the July 26 event, too!

Beer is good, Stacey. You make an intriguing point to which I agree with fully.
