This week’s top comment comes from Joel Natalie, author of the blog Radio Free JoJo and a regular GlobalErie reader.
Joel, in writing about the arrival of some big-name CEOs in Erie for the GE shareholders meeting, brought up the idea that some of those CEOs manufacture products that include component parts from Erie.
He also spoke of the pride he feels when he’s traveling and sees a product from his hometown. It’s funny that he mentions Zurn drain covers, as I noted earlier this week that the drains outside of my office building in D.C. had Zurn covers. It made me smile.
Here’s his comment:
It would be interesting to know how many of those CEO’s companies buy parts (lids, motors, containers, fasteners, coatings) from Erie manufacturers.
This will sound weird, but I always get a smile when I’m traveling to see a Zurn drain cover at a rest stop, or a Kold-Draft ice machine at the hotel. I remember being at a national broadcasting convention 20 years ago and this presenter tells the group about the best device they found in getting audio into a phone line was a coupler made by Elgin Electronics of Erie PA.
Even though many of the products that put “Erie, Pa.” in households and businesses across the USA are no longer made here, with innovation and creativity our future for manufacturing can still be bright.
I’m sure many of you have had similar “Made-in-Erie” moments while traveling or living elsewhere. If you have a good one, feel free to share.
After more than six years working as a journalist in Erie, I'm now the web editor for the Chronicle of Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., and the publisher of GlobalErie.com. I still maintain close ties to Erie - a community that I care about deeply. I hope this Web site can help inspire a better future for Erie.

Having worked as a tool and die maker for 40 years, the Plastic molds and die-cast dies I helped to create were a key factor in manufacturing many different items that are in daily use world wide, from Rubbermaid totes, to laundry baskets, appliances, cars, toys, and on and on. Yes, I can attest to the thrill of seeing a finished product, and knowing that my work helped make it possible. And yes, I could look at an item and identify it as one of mine.

I live in Baltimore and there is an ‘Erie Insurance’ right next to where I live! I always want to walk in there and yell, “Yay! Go Erie!”. It’s a stupid comfort of home I have being so far away.

Heard that Kold-Draft the ice machine company could not make any money after it came out of bankruptcy. What a shame, it used to be a good company.

The Dipwell Company
http://www.dipwell.com/history.html
This firm is now located in Northampton MA but started in Erie and were located here for many years until 2003.
You can see Dipwell products being used in many many restaurants, diners, ice cream shops, etc. and except for the new production since the move, they all say “Dipwell - Erie PA” on the front.
The company website mentioned above has photos and product info.
